The party was founded on 2 February 2024, as Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) by actor Vijay, a veteran star of Tamil cinema. He assumed the responsibility of the founder-president of the party.
TVK is launched with the slogan “பிறப்பொக்கும் எல்லா உயிர்க்கும் (All are Equal by Birth)”. In the same announcement, it was announced that the party would neither compete nor extend its support to any other parties in the 2024 Indian general election, and they would compete directly in the 2026 Tamil Nadu legislative assembly election and the 2026 Puducherry legislative assembly election.
